Cans for Comments | Giving back

After a long holiday weekend with family and taking a small hiatus from my computer, I got to soak up moments that reminded me I am very blessed. I have a great support system of family, friends, and the most amazing opportunity to photograph people’s  most precious moments. I have been blessed with an amazing 2009 and I want to wrap this year up with a great cause. Let’s give back to those that have less, those that have had unlucky experiences, heartbreak, hurt. Lets get in the holiday spirit and reach out and lend a hand. Sometimes the smallest gesture can make a big impact.  Especially during the holidays.

With all of that in mind, I’ve decided to participate in the Cans for Comments campaign this year. Canada’s ever amazing Chris + Lynn came up with this awesome concept last year and I am so happy to join them in the second year. Check out the twitter friends that are also participating.

We can make a difference. It would be great for YOU to help ME give back to my community. It’s simple, takes just a minute, and benefits a great organization.

Alright alright, down to the nitty gritty. Here are the details:

  • Now through December 11th*, I’ll donate one canned good for each and every comment left on this blog.
  • You can comment on any post (or even better, every post!). No limits!
  • For every comment YOU leave, I’ll donate a canned good to Second Harvest Heartland.
  • If you have a blog and participate in the Cans for Comments drive, leave a comment here to share your blog with my readers!
  • My fellow bloggers I challenge you to to participate and share the love and joy. I know we can make a difference.

Let’s spread this awesome cause like a wildfire!

*Added an extra week to comment away.

Can you believe it | Being Thankful. November 26th

Welp. Believe it. I actually pulled off posting everyday this month. That means today is the last thursday of the month, so Happy Thanksgiving! This month of reflecting on the little things came at such pivotal timing for me. After my mentor session early in the month, I really got into my groove of writing again. I have spent a lot of time  reflecting on my life and business.  I have experienced many ups and downs along the way but taking time to remember and write about what I was thankful for each day really made such a difference in my attitude in my everyday life. This is something I definitely want to keep up on a personal level, adding to my journal about what I can be thankful for often.

So today I challenge you to write down what you are thankful for. Many of you will do this at your thanksgiving dinners or in your head throughout the day, but there is something to be said about actually writing words down. They become so much more real and tangible. Trust me you might surprise yourself.

Here is my list of thankfuls for today: amazing husband. supportive and life changing friends.  the means to express my creativity. the last month of posts. 112 Eatery. athletic ability and last but definitely not least peppermint bark.

Also, if you are looking for some more personal reflection and goal setting, check out this amazing article Get Fired Up :: How To Make Things Happen written by Lara Casey. I can’t put into words how much of a blessing reading and doing this excerise was. I am so appreciative she shared her heart. It makes me want to meet Lara in person, give her a huge hug thanking her and then talk for hours about life. A special thanks to E for forwarding it on.

Be on the look out for a post coming soon about an easy way to be thankful and giveback to the community. Safe travels to all. Happy Thanksgiving + 4 day weekend.

Aren’t these the cutest little flats. My girl Leah was sportin’ them the other day and I had to snap a picture. Ok, yes I have a small obsession with shoes, boots and feet. Not only are they a fashion statement. I just feel like the tell the story of where they have been, what they represent, and what is to come. I love the feeling when you pop into a pair of heels, comforting boots.

Anyways, I am excited for a couple days spent with family. This thanksgiving we will be headed to the in-laws. We usually do Thanksgiving with my family here in MN, but with the crazy summer we barely got home to visit the hubby’s home town. I am so excited to disconnect for a couple days, indulge in some turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and most importantly raspberry pretzel salad. Seriously people, I could and maybe have eaten this for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Here’s to a wonderful 4 day weekend.

Good Tunes | Being Thankful. November 24th

Meet Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors. The first time I saw this amazing band was when they opened for Dave Barnes this summer at Varsity theatre. It takes a lot to impress me at a concert, especially a new band that I have never heard before. Drew & the neighbors blew me away… I was automatically memorized by their voices and really taking to every tune.  I got home downloaded their music and even set my ringtone to one of my favorite songs. One thing I loved about their live performance is the way that Drew and Ellie looked at each other. It just was such adorable evident love. I whispered to my husband, “they have to be married or crazy in love.” Later in the concert Drew announced her as his wife and I was like I knew it. Seriously their connection was totally inspirational. I want to love like that.

Drew & Dave are very active on the social media sites (which i love about vendors) and today Drew was giving away their new Christmas CD if you tweeted a message about the new CD. I did and I won! I am so excited to hear all the tracks and jam to them this holiday season. Also, make sure to head to their website and facebook page to listen to their stuff.

They also came out with their first video today. It is amazing. Another spot of how frickin’ adorable these two are and how well their voices compliment each other. Today I am thankful for this awesome group. I would love to do a cover/promo shoot for this band some day.

Hmm. I bet you never saw this one coming, ha. Chai is one of the things that definitely makes my day and like I mentioned in my earlier post.… I am pretty picky about my chai. I am so thankful that this place in near my house, the owners are nice, and that it provides a bit of a retreat for me in my busy world.

If you haven’t had a chance to get to Indigo Tea Company, perfect timing….. here is an awesome coupon. Get a large masala chai and cranberry scone too.

Seeing it all differently now | Being Thankful. November 23rd

I am thankful today for the new set of eyes that I have been given. Now you are all thinking…what the heck is she talking about?  Well, in the last couple of years the point of view that I see the world has definitely changed. I see colors, shapes, and locations like I never have before. I feel so grateful for this new view, yet crazy for missing all these little cool spots all these years. I think the first time this hit me is when I shot my first session in River Falls, WI where I attended college. I couldn’t believe at the amazing depth and variety of locations I found in the town. I had lived there for 5 years, and never truly noticed them.

I now view the world through a photo lens… I often stop on the side of the road to remember a spot, grab my iPhone and snap a quick photo or just say to myself “How the heck did you not see that before?” This engagement session was no different. Jessie and Nate met me in downtown Hudson, WI. I have been here many times, yet missed these awesome yummy warm tones that were all in walking distance of each other.  I just love the warmth that comes out of these photos.

Now this song just started playing in my head… so yes super cliche but I leave you with me singing…..I can see clearly now

Ok, I might be cheating | Being Thankful. November 19. 20. 21.

I don’t know if it totally would be classified as “cheating” but yes, below equals three thankful posts in one post. Gasp right? Ok I don’t neccesarily know if anyone really has noticed or cares, but yes I feel a tad bit guility so hence the title of this post.  Here goes nothing, my first thankful pictures would be these  holey do-dads, self named by me because I am not sure what their name really is. These holey do-dads look almost coral-like, and I just loved their dimension and texture.

I found these yesterday when I grabbed my camera to soak in the last moments of sunlight and a 55 degree day. I can’t even describe how excited I was to arrive at the park I had planned to watch the sunset. Seriously, it was like a kid in a candy store, asking myself “gina..are we there yet?”  Ok, I know this sounds like some relationship drama but, I hadn’t had alone time with my camera since Seattle. We missed each other. 🙂  New rule for myself is at least one day a week just hang out with my camera and me for a couple of hours and see what catches my eye. It is so refreshing and I think super important for my work as well. This first picture just makes me feel happy. I love the way the sun is just glazing these plants/weeds whatever they are. In my eyes they are beautiful. sunnyday0064sunnyday00521Next, I am thankful for this little potted plant. To give you a little backround, this december will mark a year in our first home. Late in the summer we finally had a little time to work on the yard and add some plants and flower beds. I picked these up when we were at the gardening store, cause I just love them. I love these flowers in wedding bouquets and even though you are not supposed to pot them I did, I just wanted to see them at my front door everyday. Well I am definitely not a green thumb and kinda just let these guys go…..and I really like how they turned out. I think that this color set would be amazing for a vintage like bouquet but more importantly I still give a lil’ peek at my pot when I am entering my house. So here-here, I am thankful for my non-green thumb that made this pot beautiful in my eyes. sunnyday0002untiddddtled-1

Lastly, I am thankful for my awareness of self (hence the self portrait below). I really feel I am getting into my groove with figuring out me and trying to view myself through God’s eyes. I am taking pride in staying true to myself and it feels great. I definitely think there will be many trials ahead, but I can look back at the ones I have already faced and know that they have made me who I am today. It’s all about the journey and I am here for the ride.

Now go enjoy your BEAUTIFUL weekend. The hubby and I plan on jamming out the holiday music and decorating the house.

This picture just makes me smile and I want to yell out  “for the win” or “touchdown”. This photo made me realize that I need to celebrate the little wins. Whether that be crossing off a line item on the to-do list, getting to the gym, or knocking the crap out of my email. I need to give myself a high-five (think Borat voice) and through my hands in the air and rejoice. So today, I am thankful for this curly haired little guy, who clueless to him, is helping me celebrate my little wins.

My sister started the search for the dress last week. I am so excited that I get to be part of this process. I definitely have a different appreciation for all things wedding now that I am in the business. I feel very honored to be her Maid of Honor, I know that people usually assume that this person would be your sister but it is still a big choice. I am so excited to continue to dress shop. My sister has great chic style and I can’t wait to see her say…Yes to the dress!

The one who doesn’t judge you for crazy just got out of bed hair, or your just got home and I’m tired and exhausted face. She is just there to greet you at the door with that little tail a wagging. She is my napping & cuddle buddy, and yes even when she wakes me up at 4am… she has my heart. Her little 4.6 pds of energy and sweetness just makes my everyday better. I am so excited to have her pictures done by my amazing pet photographer friend Sarah Beth Photography this December. Yes, I know I am a photographer but Sarah does amazing work with animals. I think her work is utter fabulous and I am so excited for her to work her magic with Mya. Now I just hope she behaves…HA.

Today I am thankful for sun-kissed days. Especially sun-kissed days in November! The sun felt so good to soak in today. With the icky month of rainy cold October we had here in Minnesota, I am taking advantage of every waking moment of fall-ish weather. It is also awesome backdrop for photos, giving me some smooth and creamy  yumminess to work with. I also had to share another photo of this adorable couple.

I am thankful for photos that make me feel warm and fuzzy. As I was preparing this couples images to be sent off, I stopped and just stared at these pictures. They evoked a feeling that immediately made me want to run upstairs and cuddle with my husband (and pup), to take advantage of the little moments together because life is a gift. I am so grateful and honored to be the person to capture these little moments.

Sarah Rhoads | Being Thankful. November 13th

Today I am thankful for the amazing Sarah Rhoads.  Last week, I spent a beautiful fall day in Seattle with Sarah and her husband Chris. I signed up to mentor with these two back in the summer time, and I couldn’t believe the time already had arrived.

I was so nervous and excited when I arrived to Seattle. I have been following Sarah’s inspiring work for awhile now, and literally I am amazed everytime she posts new photos. Her angles, the emotion, the styling and colors are so great. We started the day with my mini shoot. I spent forever looking for an outfit, and the day before I left I ran into Anthropolgie and tad day, it was fate. I also had the fabulous Tiffany Lowry come and do my hair and make-up. Seriously she was not only adorable, but did an amazing job! Anywhoo, we did my photoshoot at the ACE hotel in my room. I loved the clean an modern look. Look for a post later this month on my look at ACE.

After my shoot, we hit up some lunch at at local thai restaurant and then headed to the Rhoads adorable home. I had a ton of questions for them. It was so great and refreshing to see how they did things, ask their insight and share my journey with them. They came with their open hearts and welcomed mine. I would definitely recommend these two passionate people for a mentor session if you are a budding photographer. Check out these awesome pictures that Sarah took. They will be soon on my website.

Marija + Bobby | Minneapolis St Paul Engagement Photography | Goosebumps

Meet Marija + Bobby. I distinctly remember my consultation with this ridiculously, awesome couple. We  first got talking about their hobbies and style. They mentioned their cars & motorcycle was one thing they enjoyed, they also explained that their style was a modern + vintage mix. I was getting super excited with every new sentence they were describing to me. You know, when you just know that you are a great match with a couple? Such a fun feeling. Then we started to go over details of their special day like size of wedding, colors, dates and as we move on to locations they nonchalantly mention their reception was going to be in an airplane hanger! WHAT!?! I had to stop and ask them to repeat that again, as I realized I had acquired goosebumps because of my sheer excitement. Needless to say I am super excited for their 2010 wedding.

This will also be my thankful post. Today, I am thankful for goosebumps. Also, for the amazing clients (like M & B) that give me goosebumps opportunites. I just love these feelings that come up when you are pursuing a passion, following your heart or chasing your dreams. Some days are tougher than others, but then you will have a moment that provides goosebumps and ladies and gents its all worth it.  Today I am living for the goosebump moments.
